It’s no surprise that one of the newest people on Earth, Master William Parker Siewert, born yesterday at a robust 8.9 pounds in Brooklyn, NY, is a wailer. Not exactly the son of shy, retiring or bashful parents, Julyne and Nick, little Parker arrived a proud knock off the old outspoken block, announcing his own arrival with more than an admirable set of lungs.
Julyne and I met at a journalism conference at The Seattle Times many years ago when Rosemary was a newborn. As she’s ushered me through my years as a bumbling and often embarrassingly inept mother, she has expressed her desire a few million times to be a mommy too. And now that she is, I have tears in my eyes knowing this has been her single greatest wish in life. Well, that and meeting Nick.
None of us could be happier for the loving couple. As much joy and love as they bring to this world, we suspect their son will bring a hundred-fold!

Deirdre Timmons
An accomplished writer and filmmaker, Deirdre Timmons is a native Northwesterner who leads a busy life between working and spending time with her family. In the spring of 2013, Deirdre was caring for her mother with Alzheimer’s in addition to her normal routine. So when she began feeling tired and forgetful, she chalked it up to her busy schedule, age, and possible early symptoms of Alzheimer’s. It wasn’t long after that she began experiencing regular dizziness, lack of concentration, unexplained weight loss, and extensive bruising. This combination of symptoms seemed odd, so Deirdre sought the advice of her doctor and subsequently began physical therapy for dizziness. When the symptoms worsened, she pursued further investigation.
After MRIs, x-rays, blood tests, a CAT scan, and a brain biopsy, her brain surgeon diagnosed Deirdre with a malignant medulloblastoma brain tumor. Her prognosis: one month to live. That was five years ago.
